NANDANA teaches tribal belly dance classes on Sundays at the Solution Center in RTP (Durham).

For more information about Nandana's current class schedule or to register and pay for Nandana's classes, please contact her at nandana_dance@yahoo.com or call (919) 367-0203.

SARA teaches tribal belly dance classes on Saturdays at the Triangle Dance Studio in Durham.

Sara's classes are structured a little differently than most. There is no "beginner", "intermediate" or "advanced" level. Both classes are rigorous and challenging, and are geared towards students who have a serious interest in exploring bellydance as an artform. Please read the descriptions carefully to determine which classes would be a good fit for you.

CORE 10:00AM-11:20AM

This class is an exploration of bellydance technique focusing on isolations, posture, kinesthetic awareness, and the biomechanics of movement. Each class will begin with a centering warmup, focus on two to three moves and isolations from the ATS-inspired/Tribal/Folkloric movement vocabulary, and conclude with some group improv.

CORE is the right class for you if...
you have never taken a bellydance class before
you can only take classes intermittently (there are no class sessions)
you want to focus on movement technique
you want to learn about specific moves (feel free to suggest some either by email or at the beginning of any class)

FLOW 11:40AM-1:00PM

This class is an exploration of bellydance performance focusing on transitions, stylization, grace, fluidity and emotion. Flow classes come in 5 to 7 week sessions and students are encouraged to attend as many of those weeks as possible in order to keep up with the curriculum. These classes introduce combinations for choreography and improv that emphasize musicality. Some sessions will focus on special topics (such as a specific style or skill), while others will be combos-into-choreography.

FLOW is the right class for you if...
you are already familiar with some basic bellydance moves
you are new to bellydance but want a mental challenge
you would want to learn and/or perform a choreography with other students
you would prefer a class with a set curriculum which builds on each previous week of instruction

July 26, August 2, and August 16, 23, and 30, 10AM
CORE: This class is an exploration of bellydance technique focusing on isolations, posture, kinesthetic awareness, and the biomechanics of movement. Each class will begin with a centering warmup, focus on two to three moves and isolations from the ATS-inspired/Tribal/Folkloric movement vocabulary, and conclude with some group improv. The format of this class allows for lots of individual feedback and is great for both complete beginners and continuing students who want advice on how to tweak their Tribal to perfection. It is going to be a lot of fun and a great workout. Drop-ins welcome. (1 hour 20 minutes)

July 26, August 2, and August 16, 23, and 30, 11:40 AM
FLOW: The Summer 2008 FLOW session will have the dual focus of mastering both spins and skirtwork-- as anyone with a 10+ yard skirt knows, the two go really well together. We will learn skirt combinations for both fast and slow music, discuss the merits of different types of skirts for skirtwork, and investigate the history and origin of skirt dancing. We will also learn different types of spins, how to cultivate the ability to do multiple consecutive spins, how to spin on beat so as to match the other dancers in your group, and how to use your skirt to make even a basic spin look really cool. Please bring a skirt that measures 10 or more yards at the hem if you have one at home. A limited number of skirts will be available to borrow, and I might be able to bring some in for purchase as well. You can contact me by email if you want to know where you can buy a skirt appropriate for this class. (1 hour 20 minutes)

Fee: $14 for one class, $24 for both classes in a day, or $60 for a 6-class pass card.
Pass cards can be used for either class and do not expire.)
If financial concerns are keeping you from taking a class, please send Sara an email (skbeaman@yahoo.com). It may be possible to set up a fair barter system or some type of work-study arrangement.

Registration Information: You can RSVP for a class or class session by emailing Sara at skbeaman@yahoo.com. Please include the name of the class you would like to RSVP for and the date in the subject line (example: Flow Jan 1).

For more information on Sara's classes, please visit her website.
